Multiple Earthquakes Off Oregon Coast As Pacific Prepares For Big One

A series of earthquakes, some with a magnitude of more than 5, have shaken the sea floor off the Oregon coast since Sunday night.
None has been large enough to prompt tsunami fears. The sixth and seventh quakes, occurring late Monday Pacific time, were the weakest, measuring 3.9 and 4.2.
The sequence of quakes, while fairly unusual, is not worrisome, said Robert Dziak, a research oceanographer with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration based in Newport, Ore.

Ukraine plans to seize Russian foreign property to compensate for ‘lost’ Crimea

Kiev will nationalize Russian overseas property as compensation for the losses over Crimea’s reunification with Russia, Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Justice Natalia Sevostyanova said. The decision is now up to the European Court of Human Rights.
Ukraine will be able to use this effective instrument if the European Court of Human Rights rules in favor of Kiev, Sevostyanova told “Channel 5,” Ukraine’s National News (UNN) reported on Tuesday.
“There will be a stage of satisfaction, when we’ll determine the amount by which the compensation will be directly paid to… The tool of property seizure is very effective abroad. Russia currently has a lot of such property in other countries,” Sevostyanova said.
More than 400 Ukrainian companies and 18 gas fields have been nationalized in Crimea, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Justice.

Ukraine and its economy finds itself writing a new chapter for the novel 1984

A sad feature of recent times has been the war that is raking place in Ukraine. This gives us our first but by no means last reminder of the novel 1984 as of course we are told officially that there is a peace deal in operation. This was signed in Minsk in February. So war may indeed be peace and those involved in Ukraine may be forgiven for thinking that a type of perpetual war is being inflicted on them. Just to rub home a triumvirate of themes we have of course Ukraine being squeezed by two super-states with Europe manoeuvering on one side and Russia on the other. As it happens to the two super-states are using different means as the Russia effort is military and the European one is more financial. Indeed if we add in the United States we can wonder if the fall in the oil price last year (with consequent impact on oil-producing Russia) was part of the super-state clash.
The consequence of this for the economy of Ukraine is something that I have feared for a while. Back of the 20th of January 2014 I pointed out the problems being faced.

US To Facilitate An Accident On GREXIT As Greece Turns To Russian BRICS

Jack Lew, the US Treasury secretary, has urged Athens and its international creditors to agree a bailout deal as soon as possible, saying delays are heightening the threat of “an accident” that could force Greece out of the eurozone.

Lafazanis: Greece is preparing request to join BRICS bank

Greece is preparing and will probably submit a request to participate in the new development bank for BRICS countries and has secured Russia’s support on the issue, Productive Reconstruction, Environment and Energy Minister Panagiotis Lafazanis told ANA-MPA news agency on Friday evening.
“During my meeting with Russian Deputy Finance Minister Sergey Storchak, we secured the decisive Russian support to Greece’s request for participation in the new development bank of BRICS countries. The relevant request for Greece’s participation…will be symbolic and will be paid in installments, while right after operations begin, it will be able to accept financial support,” the minister said.

From mobile chemical weapons labs in Iraq to mobile crematoriums in Ukraine

The US State Department cannot confirm media reports alleging that Russia has delivered mobile crematoriums to Ukraine, US State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf told CNN on Wednesday. However, she continued to claim that Russia was trying to hide its presence in Ukraine.
This issue was raised on Tuesday by US media that referred to US lawmakers who visited Ukraine, and some US intelligence data. These allegations suggest that Russia has brought mobile crematoriums to Ukraine to hide the bodies of its dead soldiers.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in connection with these reports that “Frankly speaking, I doubt that these statements are trustworthy.” The presidential spokesman said “of course, such allegations cast doubt that those who have published them are sane.” “I do not say about those who have potentially voiced them,” he added.

A front-page article is devoted to a flawed story about a campus rape in the journal Rolling Stone, exposed in the leading academic journal of media critique. So severe is this departure from journalistic integrity that it is also the subject of the lead story in the business section, with a full inside page devoted to the continuation of the two reports. The shocked reports refer to several past crimes of the press: a few cases of fabrication, quickly exposed, and cases of plagiarism (“too numerous to list”). The specific crime of Rolling Stone is “lack of skepticism,” which is “in many ways the most insidious” of the three categories.
It is refreshing to see the commitment of the Times to the integrity of journalism.
On page 7 of the same issue, there is an important story by Thomas Fuller headlined “One Woman’s Mission to free Laos from Unexploded Bombs.” It reports the “single-minded effort” of a Lao-American woman, Channapha Khamvongsa, “to rid her native land of millions of bombs still buried there, the legacy of a nine-year American air campaign that made Laos one of the most heavily bombed places on earth” – soon to be outstripped by rural Cambodia, following the orders of Henry Kissinger to the US air force: “A massive bombing campaign in Cambodia. Anything that flies on anything that moves.” A comparable call for virtual genocide would be very hard to find in the archival record. It was mentioned in the Times in an article on released tapes of President Nixon, and elicited little notice.

15 Questions You’re Not Supposed To Ask In America Today

1) If Islam is really a religion of peace, as opposed to a particularly violent religion, then why do so many people and organizations across the world refuse to show Muhammad cartoons out of fear that they’ll be murdered by devout Muslims for doing it?
2) If illegal immigrants are supposed to help our economy, then why weren’t they helping the economies of the poor nations they fled?
