South Korea Grapples to Contain MERS as 1,364 in Quarantine

The World Health Organization warned that the MERS outbreak in South Korea is likely to grow, as 1,364 people remain under quarantine and confirmed cases grew to 30 people.
So far, two people have died after contracting the respiratory virus in South Korea in the largest MERS outbreak outside Saudi Arabia. More than 200 schools have shut to prevent the spread of the virus.
The extent of the outbreak in South Korea has taken many by surprise — mainly because the virus has not been shown to spread easily between humans and the health care system in the country is considered to be sophisticated and modern.
South Korean President Park Geun-hye acknowledged problems in the country’s early response earlier this week.
“Initial reaction for new infectious diseases like MERS is very important but there were some insufficiency in the initial response including the judgment on its contagiousness,” she said.

MERS Symptoms
Some infected people had mild symptoms or no symptoms at all, but most people infected with MERS-CoV developed severe respiratory illness. They had fever, cough and shortness of breath. Others reported having gastrointestinal symptoms, like diarrhea and nausea/vomiting, and kidney failure. MERS can even be deadly. Many people have died.

STUDY: Painkillers, Anti-Anxiety Meds Linked to Increased Risk of Homicide

For the first time ever, scientists have linked prescription drugs that affect the central nervous system to an increased risk of committing a homicide.
European researchers found that people who were taking a class of tranquilizers called benzodiazpines were more likely to kill someone than those who were not taking these medicines, reports Live Science.
Those drugs are used to treat anxiety, insomnia and panic disorders. Pain relievers such as opioid medications and anti-inflammatories were also found to increase a person’s risk of homicide.
“I think that these chemical substances affect the impulse control of the person,” Dr. Jari Tiihonen, lead author and a professor, told Medical Daily. “The only surprising result was that painkillers also increase the risk.”
The study also showed people taking antidepressants had only a slight increase in homicide risk, even after the researchers factored in mental illness.

Sleep-deprived? Memory-robbing proteins bulid up when you’re exhausted

It’s no secret that sleepless nights can cause dark circles and irritability, but researchers now believe it could also lead to Alzheimer’s disease. The lack of shut-eye may cause memory-robbing proteins to build up in the brain, a new study says.
Researchers at the University of California Berkeley have found that a deficit in deep non-REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep is associated with a higher risk of beta-amyloid protein build-up in the brain – the type of protein believed to attack the brain’s long-term memory and trigger Alzheimer’s diseas
Those higher levels of memory-robbing proteins then cause further sleep disruption – resulting in a vicious cycle.

DC Protesters Demand To See TPP Text, Rebuffed By Obama Administration, Police

In the latest escalation of its campaign against the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the nation’s largest labor federation is calling on the Obama administration to declassify the full text of the proposed trade agreement. And on a rainy Tuesday morning in Washington, the AFL-CIO and its allies engaged in some old-fashioned political theater to make their point.
As it stands, access to the deal is limited to negotiators and, upon special request, members of Congress, all of whom are legally barred from disclosing the details. Those strict rules remain in place even as the White House lobbies the House of Representatives on so-called fast-track legislation. The bill would prevent lawmakers from amending the version of the trade deal finalized by negotiators and is widely seen as a prerequisite to passage of the treaty, which would link the United States with 11 other Pacific Rim countries, including Japan, Australia and Singapore. (The Senate passed fast-track last month, and an extremely tight House vote is expected soon.)

Supreme Court Rules Police DO NOT Need A Warrant To Search Your Home

Much to the surprise of the general public, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled in favor of expanded the ability of law enforcement to search without warrants.
Justice Samuel Alito wrote for the majority of the court which ruled 6 to 3 that “when occupants of a residents disagree on whether they will admit police without a warrant, the objecting occupant must be physically present,” the Washington Post reported. “That doesn’t change if police have removed the objector,” the court added.
“An occupant who is absent due to a lawful detention or arrest stands in the same shoes as an occupant who is absent for any other reason,” Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. wrote.
“Alito said there was no need for officers to obtain a warrant,” the Post explained. “When they arrived the first time, having followed Fernandez from the scene of a robbery, Rojas answered the door crying, with a bump on her nose and blood on her hands and shirt.”

Why The Netherlands Just Banned Monsanto’s Glyphosate-Based Herbicides

The Netherlands has just become the latest country, following Russia, Mexico, and many others, to say no to Monsanto. The sale and use of glyphosate-based herbicides (the most commonly used herbicides in the world) has just been banned for non-commercial use in the country, effective later this year. This means that people will no longer be able to spray RoundUp on their lawns and gardens and will instead have to find another (hopefully more natural) means of pest control.
This is definitely a step in the right direction.

Of all the financial threats facing Americans of retirement age — outliving savings, falling for scams, paying for long-term care — housing isn’t supposed to be one. But after a home-price collapse, the worst recession since the 1930s and some calamitous decisions to turn homes into cash machines, millions of them are straining to make house payments.
The consequences can be severe. Retirees who use retirement money to pay housing costs can face disaster if their health deteriorates or their savings run short. They’re more likely to need help from the government, charities or their children. Or they must keep working deep into retirement.
“It’s a big problem coming off the housing bubble,” says Cary Sternberg, who advises seniors on housing issues in The Villages, a Florida retirement community. “A growing number of seniors are struggling with what to do about their home and their mortgage and their retirement.”

A THIRD OF TODAY’S CAR BUYERS ARE LOCKING THEMSELVES INTO LOANS

The fact that nearly a third of today’s car buyers are locking themselves into loans that run until at least 2021 would seem to be the most important part of the story, since it’s not what you buy but how you pay for it that matters going forward. With car loans, as with student loans, money borrowed and spent today comes at the expense of spending that might otherwise have happened tomorrow. Students graduating with crushing debts won’t be buying houses anytime soon, while today’s new car buyers won’t be back in the showroom until their “car mortgages” are paid off.
So the auto industry’s strength, driven as it is by long-term subprime lending, is actually a sign of weakness. These days even superficially good numbers are bad.

NGO threatens legal action against Israel over Hamas claim

A British non-governmental organization is threatening legal action against the Israeli government over its accusation that the organization is linked to the militant group Hamas — while denying that the Hamas leader called the NGO to congratulate it.
The Palestinian Return Center this week was granted consultative status at the United Nations, prompting Israel's U.N. mission to protest that the organization is associated with Hamas and "promotes anti-Israel propaganda."
The organization said the claim that it is affiliated with Hamas is unfounded. The group said it defends the right of return for Palestinian refugees and has existed for almost two decades.

Humanitarian Disaster: 16 Million Yemenis Have No Clean Water

Saudi-led, US-sponsored bombing campaign has destroyed public infrastructure.
Almost two thirds of the Yemeni population, a total of 16 million people, have no access to drinking water due to aerial bombing, fighting and lack of fuel in the country, Oxfam warned today.
Oxfam said in a statement that the population is being forced to drink unsafe water due to the destruction of public infrastructure, which increases the risk of life-threatening diseases like malaria, cholera and diarrhea.
Millions of people are digging wells for water, which is then taken away by truck and whose price has tripled in recent weeks.
Before the start of the current conflict, 13 million people or about half the population had no access to potable water, but the violence has raised that figure to three million more.
The director of Oxfam in Yemen, Grace Ommer said that the population at risk is equivalent to that of the cities of Berlin, London, Paris and Rome together.
In the streets the trash continues to pile up, people have to go through broken sewers while having to face the reality of not having drinking water for the seventh consecutive week, regretted Ommer, who also reported fuel shortages and lack of medical supplies.

“It’s impossible to know exactly when the next Cascadia earthquake will occur,” said Evelyn Roeloffs of the U.S. Geological Survey, speaking last year on the 313th anniversary of a massive quake that hit in 1700—the last major one in the region. “We can’t be sure that it won’t be tomorrow, and we shouldn’t make the mistake of assuming we have decades to prepare.”

How the "Holocaust" was faked

The alleged "Holocaust" of "6 million Jews" at the hands of Adolf Hitler and National Socialist Germany during WWII is the biggest lie ever foisted upon humanity. The very idea that the Germans organized and executed a complex conspiracy involving "homicidal gas chambers" and other barbaric, sadistic forms of mass murder designed to exterminate European Jewry during WWII is laughable on its face when you stop and objectively think about it.
National Socialist Germany and her allies were fighting a multi-front war against some of the most powerful nations in the world at the time, including the United States, the British Empire, and the Soviet Union. The idea that they would divert their precious and extremely scarce resources and manpower towards implementing a systematic campaign of mass murder specifically designed to annihilate European Jewry is absurd.
